Landscape Curbing in Honolulu and the Valleys
In town the cost driver is access, not soil. Whether the trailer and mixer can reach the work decides the price of a Honolulu curbing job more than the footage does.
Town lots are older, tighter and harder to get equipment into than anywhere else on the island. On most Honolulu jobs the number that moves the quote is not how many feet you want. It is whether we can get to them.
The ground
Highly variable across the valleys and the coastal flat. Manoa and Palolo sit on deep weathered soil with a great deal of rainfall behind them. The flat closer to the water is drier and shallower. Hawaii Kai splits again between marina lots on fill and ridge lots on thin soil over rock.
This is the one part of the island where we genuinely check per property rather than working from the zone.
Water, and what the valleys do with it
The annual rainfall figure for town looks moderate and it hides what actually happens. The valleys funnel a surprising volume down through back yards during heavy rain, and if your lot is on a valley floor then drainage gaps are not optional regardless of what the average says.
What is growing
Bermuda is common through the sunnier flat areas, with the usual honest caveat about rhizomes going under a standard curb. St. Augustine takes over in the shaded valley lots, and a curb stops that one properly.
Access is the price
A narrow side yard, a gate under four feet, a steep driveway or no street parking all mean material moves by wheelbarrow instead of by machine. That shows up in the quote and it should.

Hawaii Kai adds two things on top. Salt near the water, which changes the sealer we use. And several associations with approved color and material lists, which are much easier to work inside than to appeal.

1 How many feet of edging?
Not sure? Walk it heel-to-toe. One adult stride is close to 3 ft. Most front yards land between 100 and 200 ft.
The fastest way: pace the outside of every bed you want bordered, counting strides, then multiply by 3. Round up. Curves eat a little more than they look like they will.
Common runs: one flower bed 25–40 ft · front of the house 60–100 ft · front yard, both sides 120–200 ft · front and back 300–500 ft · a single tree ring about 10 ft.

Under 100 ft the rate steps up to $60–$75/ft. Setup, mixing and cleanup cost the same on a 40 ft run as a 400 ft one. Adding a second bed or a few tree rings on the same visit brings the per-foot price down fast.
Removal is the widest variable in here. We tighten it on site once we see what is actually coming out of the ground.
