Landscape Curbing in Central Oahu
Central Oahu sits on Molokai series oxisol, the red dirt. It is kaolinitic rather than smectitic, which makes it a low shrink swell clay and structurally one of the better soils on the island to build a curb on.
The red dirt up here stains everything you own and looks like it must be a problem. It is not. Central Oahu is the easiest ground on the island to put a curb on, and the reason is worth understanding.
Why the red dirt is fine
The Molokai series is a very fine kaolinitic oxisol weathered out of basic igneous rock, dark reddish brown, covering about 36,500 acres from sea level to 1,500 feet. It is well drained with moderate permeability.
The word doing the work in that description is kaolinitic. Kaolinite is a low activity clay. It does not swell and shrink the way smectite does, and smectite is what makes the Lualualei clay out leeward crack open two and a half inches in the dry season.
So the classic red Hawaiian dirt, the stuff that ruins white shoes and never comes out of a truck bed, is structurally very well behaved under a shallow founded concrete curb. Gray brown leeward clay is the problem soil. This is not it.
Water
Moderate rainfall and moderate permeability. Drainage gaps go in where the ground actually falls, which on most of these lots is one or two obvious spots rather than the whole run.
What is growing
A mix, with more zoysia up here than most of the island. Zoysia handles the elevation and periodic wet better than Bermuda does, and while it spreads by both stolons and rhizomes it moves slowly enough that a curb holds it in practice.
Tract lots and design committees
Mililani in particular is uniform tract housing, which means once we have the layout for one floor plan we largely have it for the street. It also means your curb will sit in view of several neighbors with the same house.
Color choice matters more here than anywhere else for exactly that reason. Quieter tones age better on a uniform street than a strong red or brown does. Earthy Tan, Cobble Buff and Pewter Gray are what most people land on and none of them ever look like a mistake.

Not sure? Walk it heel-to-toe. One adult stride is close to 3 ft. Most front yards land between 100 and 200 ft.
The fastest way: pace the outside of every bed you want bordered, counting strides, then multiply by 3. Round up. Curves eat a little more than they look like they will.
Common runs: one flower bed 25–40 ft · front of the house 60–100 ft · front yard, both sides 120–200 ft · front and back 300–500 ft · a single tree ring about 10 ft.

Under 100 ft the rate steps up to $60–$75/ft. Setup, mixing and cleanup cost the same on a 40 ft run as a 400 ft one. Adding a second bed or a few tree rings on the same visit brings the per-foot price down fast.
Removal is the widest variable in here. We tighten it on site once we see what is actually coming out of the ground.
