What landscape curbing actually costs on Oahu
No cost guide on the internet publishes Hawaii curbing prices. We checked ten of them. So here are ours, in full, including the rate table we quote from and an honest explanation of why the number is higher than what you saw on a mainland site.

1 How many feet of edging?
Not sure? Walk it heel-to-toe. One adult stride is close to 3 ft. Most front yards land between 100 and 200 ft.
The fastest way: pace the outside of every bed you want bordered, counting strides, then multiply by 3. Round up. Curves eat a little more than they look like they will.

Under 100 ft the rate steps up to $60–$75/ft. Setup, mixing and cleanup cost the same on a 40 ft run as a 400 ft one. Adding a second bed or a few tree rings on the same visit brings the per-foot price down fast.
Removal is the widest variable in here. We tighten it on site once we see what is actually coming out of the ground.

GET is Hawaii's General Excise Tax. On Oahu it is 4.5%, which is 4% state plus a 0.5% county surcharge running through 31 December 2030. The 4.712% figure is the maximum a business is allowed to visibly pass on, because the tax is itself taxable. Every Hawaii contractor pays it. Not every one shows it to you before the invoice.

Why is this more than the price I found online?
Because almost every cost guide you have read is pricing a different product in a different economy. Two things separate their number from ours, and both are checkable.
1. Those figures are mostly for plain gray curbing
The $5 to $18 range that HomeGuide and Thumbtack publish is basic, uncolored, unstamped edging. Decorative work is its own tier nationally, and the same sources put stamped concrete at $25 to $45 a foot and premium decorative at $35 to $60 and up. Comparing a stamped, integrally colored curb to a plain one is comparing different jobs.
2. Hawaii is the most expensive concrete market in the United States
Ready-mix here runs $147 to $194 a cubic yard, which ranks Hawaii 51st out of 51 jurisdictions, at roughly 1.35 times the national average. Hawaii DBEDT puts construction costs 20 to 40 percent above the mainland, with imported materials in the same band, because nearly everything arrives by barge.
We sit at the upper end of that adjusted band, and we would rather show you the working than pretend the gap is not there. What you are buying at the top of it is a base prepped for the soil you actually have, control joints cut where the ground will move, and drainage gaps cast in where this island needs them.
What moves the price
Pushes it up
- Short runs. The trailer, the mixer, and the cleanup cost the same for 40 ft as for 400.
- Lots of tight curves. Slower to extrude and slower to hand-finish at every radius.
- Broken-up segments. Six separate 30 ft runs is a very different job from one 180 ft run.
- Hard access. If the machine and the mixer cannot get to the work, everything moves by barrow.
- Roots and rock. Coral hardpan out in Ewa, big roots anywhere near mature trees.
- Removal. Pulling out old edging first, especially set concrete or brick.
Brings it down
- Long continuous runs. The single biggest lever, and the reason per-foot pricing rewards doing it all at once.
- Mostly straight lines. Fewer corners, faster pour.
- Doing it in one visit. One mobilization instead of two or three.
- Flat, clear ground. Nothing to demo, nothing to work around.
- Standard finish. Plain gray is the same concrete and the same lifespan as colored, minus the pigment.
- Neighbors going in together. Same trailer, same day, same street, so ask us.
Twenty-five years of edging, priced out
Upfront cost is the wrong number to compare. This is 100 ft of border, over 25 years, including the replacements.

Read that honestly. On pure materials, plastic still wins on 25-year cost. What it does not account for is your weekend, six times over, and a border that looks tired for most of those 25 years. Concrete curbing is not the cheap option and we are not going to argue it is. It is the option you install once. If you redesign your beds every few years, it is genuinely the wrong product and we will tell you so.

How much does landscape curbing cost on Oahu?
Most residential jobs run $40 to $50 per linear foot for standard curbing, and $48 to $68 per foot with color or a stamped pattern. A typical front yard of 150 feet lands around $7,900 to $10,950. Runs under 100 feet price higher per foot, $60 to $75, because setup, mixing and cleanup cost the same whether the run is 40 feet or 400. Why is curbing more expensive in Hawaii than the prices I see online?
Most national cost guides quote $12 to $22 a foot, but those figures are for plain gray curbing on the mainland. Two things separate that from an Oahu price. First, decorative work means color and stamping, and that is its own tier nationally at $25 to $45 a foot. Second, Hawaii is the most expensive state in the country for concrete, running about 1.35 times the national average, with construction costs 20 to 40 percent above the mainland because nearly every material arrives by barge. Apply that factor to the decorative tier and you get $34 to $61 a foot, which is where our pricing sits.
Does concrete curbing crack in Hawaii?
Not the way it does on the mainland. The failure everyone has read about is frost heave. Water freezes under the curb, lifts it, and cracks it over a few winters. That does not happen here, because Oahu does not freeze. What does cause problems locally is expansive clay soil on the leeward side, tree roots exploiting an existing weak point, and curb placed on loose fill instead of compacted undisturbed ground. Control joints are cut so that any movement cracks in a straight line at a joint where it reads as part of the design, rather than randomly. No honest installer will promise concrete that never cracks.
Will curbing stop grass from growing into my beds?
For St. Augustine and seashore paspalum, yes. Both spread by stolons that run above ground, and a raised curb face is a real barrier they have to climb over into dry mulch. Bermuda grass is the honest exception. Bermuda spreads by underground rhizomes as well as surface stolons, and a standard curb does not go deep enough to stop rhizomes. If you have Bermuda, curbing will dramatically reduce the creep and end the string trimming, but you will still need to manage the bed edge. We would rather tell you that up front than have you find out in year two.
